Both finishes are durable when they’re done in a factory. The difference is how they show wear, and how easy they are to touch up.
Painted cabinets
- Clean, solid color, and the look most people picture today
- Can show hairline cracks at the joints of five-piece doors as the wood moves with humidity. That’s normal and not a defect
- Chips are easy to spot and easy to touch up
Stained cabinets
- The grain hides small dings and fingerprints
- No joint lines, because stain moves with the wood
- Warm and natural, and coming back strongly in 2026
Our usual advice
Busy family kitchen? Consider stain on the lower cabinets and island, and paint on the uppers. You get the light, bright look up high and a forgiving finish where the kids and dogs are.
